Go Shabby Chic at Fundu Lagoon on Pemba Island, Zanzibar

Pemba is definitely one of the jewels of the Indian Ocean and is patiently waiting to be explored. It is accessible by light aircraft from Zanzibar (±30 minutes) so there is no excuse not to visit if you’re in the area!

Pemba is the northernmost Island of the archipelago. It is still the world’s major clove producer, but has now slipped into its more traditional role of being an island Paradise with less inter-island trade.

The tourism industry in Pemba is still in its infancy and infrastructure is therefore quite basic, although this is slowly beginning to change with a few exclusive resorts springing up on the island.

Fundu Lagoon is located in the south west of Pemba Island and is only accessible by boat. The word that is thrown around is shabby chic consisting of wooden walkways and thatched rooms with amazing ocean views. This is truly a little piece of paradise. Accommodation at Fundu is in 18 luxury thatched rooms and suites.

There are 3 levels; standard, suites and superior suites. Each room has an ocean view and suites offer private chill out areas and plunge pools. Facilities at Fundu include a large infinity pool, the Fusion Spa, 3 bars and a restaurant. Fundu Lagoon is only accessible by boat and is located in the south west of Pemba Island which is a 30 minute flight from Zanzibar island.

The main rainy season is normally between March and May. There are normally short, heavy, downpours. It is very humid at this time of year and temperatures can reach the high 30′s. The dry season is from June through to October. Temperatures can vary but it’s usually really nice weather during this time of the year and is a good time to visit. November and December can have some fairly light rains and then January and February can clear up again before the start of the heavy rains in March.
