The camp is located on the south eastern side of the delta in a private concession. David, the owner, is a professional wildlife photographer who set up Chitabe as he was particularly interested in studying the behaviour of wild dogs which are frequently found in this area. It is an amazing area for game viewing and for cat sightings in particular. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and very in tune with the particular interests of their guests at the time. They will not be content unless they have located the pride of lion with their cubs or the leopard that was spotted the day before.

Chitabe is made up of eight spacious Meru style “tents” built on elevated wooden decking in amongst the trees. They are extremely luxurious with en-suite bathrooms and stylishly decorated with a few of David’s wildlife prints which add a warm and personal touch. Although you have every little luxury that you would ever need, you don’t lose the feeling that you are in the bush. As you lie in bed don’t be surprised to hear the nearby hippos grazing at night, the roar of distant lion and a pack of wild dogs making a kill.

The main camp area is beautifully furnished with a quirky but homely feel and has a great view across the open plains. Chitabe also has a great swimming pool to relax by in the heat of the day. The main activity offered at Chitabe is the game drive with your guide in a 4×4 Land rover. Being on a private concession, night drives are also possible. Nature walks are also offered but only in the dry months when the bush is not too dense and predators can be seen at a safe distance!

Chitabe Camp is located on a stunning island on a private concession in the south-east of the Okavango Delta. It is most easily accessed via a short charter flight from Maun followed by a transfer by 4×4 Land rover.

Chitabe is open year round. November to February is the hot and rainy season with green vegetation which is visually stunning but makes game viewing more difficult as the bush is thick. It also sees the birth of new born which brings a very interesting dynamic to the delta with an increase in predator activity. It is also a time when a huge number of birds migrate into the area. This period of the year is also the most affordable as it is less popular. The rain up in Angola usually reaches the delta in March or April which is a fascinating period as the rising water levels completely transforms the area. July to mid October is the peak season as temperatures are cooler, the weather is dry and the lack of rain brings the animals to known water holes making game viewing much better.

From around £430 or $675 per person per night sharing, fully inclusive of all meals, drinks and game activities
