Hike Table Mountain

Table mountain is undoubtedly one of the most stunning attractions CT and even SA has to offer, so it was with no hesitation that I decided to head up to the top on foot. Not really knowing the mountain well, I headed up to the cable station assuming I would be able to find a path to the top nearby. I was correct, but little did I know that the path I had chosen, being the most direct route to the top, was also one of the steepest routes you can take short of scaling sheer cliff faces! (okay I may be exaggerating a little, but Im super unfit). Either way, the hike to the top was still well worth the effort, with many an opportunity to stop catch your breath, and have it taken away again by the magnificent view out over table bay behind you. I was also spurred on by the fact of spending time on such an iconic landmark, and couldn’t stop thinking how many times I’d envisioned making the mission to the top while I was sitting home in dreary London. I’ve got to admit, as I approached the last 20mins of the hike thoughts of turning back did cross my mind, but somehow I managed to push on and upon reaching the top of the table, a feeling of real achievement came over me and looking out from the top gave me such a feeling of exhilaration that the end product was more than worth the effort (which if Im truly honest, wasn’t actually that bad). After spending an hour or two up top, admiring the views around the whole peninsula and grabbing a quick bite to eat. I decided the achievement was in making it to the top, not back down again. And so I opted for the much easier (but still no less worthwhile) route of taking the cable way down. The trip to the bottom was over so quickly I felt a little ashamed at how I struggled to get to the top, but as I looked back up I couldn’t help but give myself a mental pat on the back. I’ve got to recommend this to everyone visiting Cape Town, suck it up and hike to the top, it really is an amazing experience and you truly feel a lot more involved (if thats the right word) in what you’re doing.
