Koeel bay, the secret surf spot near Cape Town

Summer can be a pretty dreary time for surf in Cape Town, as the powerful winter swells subside and get replaced by small, inconsistent wind swell resulting in weeks of flat spells all around the peninsula. However there are a few spots which consistently seem to catch the best of what little swell is on offer, and Koeel Bay (K-Bay) is one of these. Besides being an absolutely stunning beach away from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town city life, K Bay is effectively South facing, meaning that it catches swell from a far larger window than most spots and is also just out of False bay which exposes it to the longer period open ocean swells. Being up against the cliffs also shelters it from the howling South Easter which plagues so many other spots around CT. Having not found any surf in a couple of weeks I decided to head out this way myself and was pleasantly surprised. Not only was there a small, but fun nonetheless beach break running, but the water was warm enough to swim in just my boardshorts, and a wetsuit actually made it uncomfortably hot. On the right day, K bay can supply some awesome waves too, with a couple of peaks along the beach to sit on. So when you’re looking for a wave in summer, don’t be put off by the drive outside of Cape Town, it may just be well worth the effort.
