LATEST:Travel picture of the week - Hout Bay in Cape Town |
Just when you thought you couldn’t get any more remote... the untouched Namib Desert. This land of seemingly never-ending sand dunes, abandoned diamond mines and wild jackals is a pretty unforgiving territory, few people get the opportunity to visit this barren but beautiful landscape, no-one lives here but make the journey out to Saddle Hill and Spencer Bay and you won’t be disappointed, I promise you.
From your base in Luderitz, venture first along a tar road, then onto gravel road, then a faint path through the stony desert floor, then... sand. Nothing but sand for miles around, your guides will lead you on a journey past Oryx, a desert-adapted antelope that doesn’t drink water during its whole lifetime, rusted vehicles and crumbling huts left over from the diamond days and breathtaking views of the land “where the dunes meet the sea”.
Learn to dominate 35 degree sand dunes in your Toyota Land Cruiser, hear them roar as you rumble down the slip face, then top it all off with a braai on the beach, with not another soul to spoil your enjoyment.
