What exactly is on offer here?

Picture the scene: you stand there, headset on, megaphone in one hand, note sheet in the other and your protagonists waiting for your orders, hanging on your every word. You’re the Director, you call the shots and they listen to you, after all, it is your movie.

The Pepper Film and Photography course is a very unique opportunity. It has been designed not only to give you the theoretical and practical skills to take up film or photography professionally but also to get you involved in the workings of a dynamic production company. One day on the set of a music video shoot, the next touching up your short film in the editing suite, this is a course packed with new experiences, a unique insight into day-to-day happenings of film-makers and then still time for our turn behind the camera!

Dedicated tuition from young and passionate guys provides the perfect environment to broaden and hone your areas of expertise and once confident with the techniques it’s over to you to go through every stage of the creative process to end with a brand new finished product of your own. You will of course have expert assistance and guidance throughout to make sure your project turns out just how you want it to and the Pepper guides are always on hand for any extra help and advice.

How does the programme run?

Days are split between professional training and practical application. Learning is fast as you put each day’s skills into a practical situation. The first week is dedicated to camera theory and then composition techniques with a group presentation and crit at the end of the week. Week two is film theory but also set lighting and sound, also put straight into practice with you behind the camera, shooting a one minute piece to be reviewed at the end of the week!

You’ll then click through the gears, with time spent in the editing suite and Dean’s magic grading and colouring techniques as well as tips on the development process and ideas for your own project. The final three weeks are spent planning, shooting and then producing your own piece. During this time you’ll have access to all equipment and facilities and even an included budget for your set, artists and make-up.

All in all, a program full of new skills, personal development on a creative and production level and a unique exposure to a cutting-edge company at the forefront of the Cape Town film scene.
