What exactly is on offer here?

This sailing course is a chance to qualify as an RYA Coastal Skipper in seven weeks whilst exploring some of the most beautiful routes in the world. A fully RYA accredited programme means your qualifications are recognised worldwide allowing you to work on boats absolutely everywhere.

Expert instructors with huge experience of and enthusiasm for the ocean will see you progress to master the seas surrounding the famous Cape of Good Hope. Living on board the yacht for some weeks gives you a real taste of the industry lifestyle and as you progress you’ll have the chance to race in regattas in the stunning Table Bay.

How does the programme run?

You’ll be kept busy for the full seven weeks, with four of these spent living on board. Whether in the classroom or out at sea you’ll always be picked up and dropped off at your accommodation in town and will be in the very capable hands of the 2 Oceans team.

The week by week schedule is designed to give you maximum time on the water to build your all-important logged hours behind the wheel whilst also picking up your qualifications along the way. The outline is as follows:

Week 1 - Competent Crew (on board)

Week 2 - Day Skipper Theory (classroom)

Week 3 - Day Skipper Practical (on board)

Week 4 – Yachtmaster Coastal Theory (classroom)

Week 5 – Yachtmaster Coastal Practical (on board)

Week 6 – Yachtmaster Coastal Exam Prep (on board)

Week 7 – Yachtmaster Coastal Exam (on board)

Extra courses that are included on this programme are The Power Boat Level II and The SRC Radio certificate.

Who runs it?

The 2 Oceans Maritime Academy is mad about sailing. These guys love nothing more than hoisting the mainsail and hitting the open ocean. Sean runs the show and we reckon he’s got just about enough experience to offer the ultimate sailing programme; an RYA certified Sail and Power Yachtmaster Instructor and Examiner, he’s also a qualified teacher and has over 12 years worth of experience in instruction, racing and working in the industry professionally. If he’s not on board with the latest group of soon-to-be Coastal Skippers, you’ll probably find him racing his brand new Pacer ’37 in a regatta in Table Bay or skippering a team in the prestigious Cape to Rio race across the Atlantic.

What will I get out of it?

-          Sailing qualifications recognised worldwide up to Coastal Skipper

-          7 weeks sailing experience in some of the most beautiful waters in the world

Tell me more about Sailing in Cape Town

Sailing invokes images of open ocean and high seas and feelings of freedom and discovery. Throughout history Cape Town and in particular The Cape of Good Hope have been hugely significant landmarks when it comes to sailing.

Explorers saw it as their half-way point between Europe and the New World of the East on their Spice Trade voyages and to this day many keen sailors all over the world see sailing around The Cape of Good Hope as the one journey they have to make.

The views aren’t bad either; picture evening races in Table Bay with the awesome Table Mountain towering above the city, dropping anchor for lunch or sundowners off the beautiful Clifton beaches and cruising past seal colonies and deserted white sand stretched up and down the peninsula.

This is sailing as it’s meant to be – sunny, windy and stunning scenery all around.

Cape Town is also one of the cheapest places in the world to sail and take sailing qualifications. The only RYA accredited testing centre is just up the West Coast in Langebaan and it’s great value for racking up the qualifications so you’ll be skippering trips around The Cape of Good Hope in no time!
