What exactly is on offer here?

Surfing needs almost no introduction. It is a sport that has to be experienced to know what it is really about. The Pepper Surf Programme gives everyone from complete novices through to experienced surfers the opportunity to learn and improve their skills as well as having the chance to qualify as an SSA Surf Coach (South African Surfing Association - an internationally recognised qualification) and a Beach Life Saver.

Not only will this programme allow you to develop higher levels of knowledge and skills in the sport of surfing but it will also provide you the coaches, opportunity, support, self improvement and necessary training to pursue a career in professional surf coaching yourself.

How does the programme run?

No matter what the plan for the day is you’ll be picked up in the morning at your accommodation and dropped back there at the end of the day. There’s unlimited surfing time - you really can surf all day every day if you want to! Depending on conditions and what stage you’re at in the course, you’ll be driven to wherever the surf is right for you.

Access to all types of boards and wetsuits combined with expert teaching and guidance will give you the best possible chance to improve your own surfing ability and gain the tricks and techniques which will set you apart from other surf coaches.

On top of continuous safety tips and lifestyle do’s and don’ts there’ll be trips to see the detail and skill that goes into making surfboards and a chance to design your own customized board ready for the road trip!

  • Practical surfing instruction
  • Fault finding correction
  • Surfboard rescue techniques
  • Fitness for surfing
  • Swell prediction
  • The role of a surf instructor
  • Communication and teaching technique
  • Factors affecting skills
  • Planning and running surf courses
  • Giving a presentation to the group
  • Relations with general public and organisations

Some Beach Life Saver requirements:

  • Swim 50m in open water and rescue casualty without assistance
  • Run 200m on beach and swim 200m
  • Defensive actions when casualties retaliate
  • Assistance and water administer aftercare
  • Demonstrate rescue in open water using rescue aid
  • Demonstrate knowledge of human physiology and anatomy relevant to carry out:

a.)    Expired air Resuscitation

b.)    External Cardiac

c.)     Basic level spinal injury management

d.)    Basic 1st aid

  • First Aid knowledge – shock, bleeding, cramp, heat stroke, sun burn, fractures, stings, hyperthermia. And shark attack etc.
  • Basic theory on anatomy – breathing, lungs, protection, blood circulation etc

Who runs it?

Liam Wood is a professional surfer and qualified instructor as well as being a certified Life Saver. He has been in the industry for many years and is well known and respected in the surfing community. Liam will be overseeing your surf programme and making sure that you reach the necessary fitness and skill level to take your SSA exam. (photo of Liam)

Cape Town is widely regarded as being one of the best surfing areas in the world. It’s got waves to suit all standards all year round. The climate is great, the city is awesome and the surrounding scenery is about as good as it gets.

With two great big bays and surf spots up and down the peninsula there’s so many breaks close to Cape Town to explore. There are perfect beginners’ waves at Muizenberg, Big Bay and Long Beach, great intermediate options for honing recently acquired skills, right up to the locally known “Dungeons” spot which has mammoth waves that have hosted the world-class Big Wave Africa contest.
