Tracking big 5 animals on horseback casts an entirely different light on safaris. Macatoo camp, situated on the western side of the Okavango Delta, is the base for our horseback safaris and has now won the Best Riding Safari award from the Good Safari Guide for the second year running.

The camp consists of large, walk-in, twin bedded tents, each with their own en-suite shower and loo. There is also a large furnished mess tent where you can relax with a few drinks and a pool to wind down in. We would recommend safaris of at least six nights as you will have the opportunity to experience the thrill of riding out to a mobile fly-camp midway through your itinerary.
The riding is varied, sometimes quietly walking, stalking big game and admiring the bird life, sometimes cantering through the water-meadows alongside galloping giraffe and lechwe. There are over 40 horses at the camp with 8 recent arrivals from Namibia including a spirited Palomino and a statuesque Friesian Cross.
You can spend 4 to 6 hours a day in the saddle with groups of no more than 7 guests. You may be required to gallop out of trouble, so we cannot take beginners!
Macatoo can be reached by charter flight from Maun. Air Botswana operates daily flights to Maun from Johannesburg. It is also possible to fly to Maun via Victoria Falls, Windhoek or Cape Town so you can combine your horseback safari with white water rafting, a 4x4 trip through the Namib desert or abseiling down Table Mountain!
Macatoo is open year round. November to February is the middle of summer in Botswana and also the rainy season with green vegetation, periodic showers and rising water levels. July to mid October is the peak season as temperatures are cooler and the weather is dry.
From £340 per person per night, fully inclusive of all accommodation, activities, meals, beverages (within reason)
If you have some riding experience then Macatoo really is a dream camp. Exploring the bush and galloping through water savannahs alongside Giraffe are experiences you will struggle to forget.
